Sustainable Consumption & Production
What is SCP ?
“Sustainable production and
consumption is the use of goods and services that respond to basic needs and
bring a better qualify of life, while minimizing the use of natural resources,
toxic materials and emissions of waste and pollutants over the life cycle, so
as not to jeopardize the needs of future generations.”
Symposium: Sustainable Consumption. Oslo,
Norway; 19-20 January 1994
Why SCP ?
Ø
Global
population which stood at 1.65 billion in 1900 grew to 6
billion in 2000 and is expected to reach about 9 billion in 2050.
Ø
Between the years 1900 and 2000
world Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at constant prices increased about
19-fold.
Ø
During
the same period industrial and manufacturing output increased by
more than 50 fold.
Ø
Total
world consumption of marketed energy is projected to increase
by 44% from 2006 -2030.
Ø
60% of world ecosystem services have been degraded
Ø
15
out of 24 key Eco-system
services are degraded or used unsustainable, often with negative
consequences for the poor
Ø
People
now use between 40 percent and 50 percent of all available freshwater
running off the land. Water withdrawals have doubled over the past 40
years.
Ø
Over
a quarter of all fish stocks are over harvested.
How do it ?
Ø using natural resources and energy more
efficiently to reduce environmental impacts
Ø producing and using products and services
in a way that is least harmful to the environment
Ø doing more with less
Ø To promote social and economic development
Ø Within the carrying capacity of ecosystems
Ø By addressing and, where appropriate,
de-linking economic growth and environmental degradation
Ø Through improving efficiency and
sustainability in the use of resources and production processes
Ø And reducing resource degradation,
pollution and waste.
Ø Cost Reduction
– through resource efficiency , lower waste treatment and disposal cost
– Lower production costs = lower costs for the customer
Ø Increase in market share (new or existing markets)
Ø Quality improvement
Ø Innovation and creativity
Ø Meet customer demand
– leading to customer satisfaction and loyalty
Ø Competitive advantage – ready for the future
Ø Effective employee motivation through improved working environment and motivation
Ø Improved public image for the company and its products
